2D & 3D MAMMOGRAM
2D Mammogram employs low dose high resolution X-Ray for breast imaging. This is an internationally accepted screening method for early breast cancer detection.
3D Mammogram employs the same low dose high resolution X-ray for breast cancer detection as 2D but it has 3 dimensional capabilities which allows for more accurate and detailed evaluation in dense breasts. It has been shown to have 30% increase in cancer detection rate and 20% reduction in false positive which decreases additional imaging.
Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography,CESM is a 2D Mammogram performed after intravenous injection of iodinated contrast. Its basic principle is the same as MRI which reveals tumour at area of increased abnormal blood flow in the breast. Professor Fiona Gilbert, professor of Radiology of Cambridge University, remarked that CESM not only is more sensitive than conventional 2D mammography, it may be even more accurate than MRI in reducing false positive diagnosis.
General requirement for exams:
-
Prior booking is required on (+852) 3896 0900.
-
Please refrain from using deodorant, body cream or baby powder on the day of the examination as they would interfere with the breast images.
-
Please inform the centre if there is a possibility of pregnancy or on breast feeding.
-
Please bring any previous imaging films and reports for reference.
For Contrast Enhancement Spectral Mammogram:
-
Please inform the centre if there is a history of hyperthyroidism, multiple myeloma, renal disease, and allergy (to food, drugs and materials), asthma or eczema.
-
For those with allergic history or tendency, 40 mg Prednisolone taken orally at 12 hours and 2 hours before exam is advised. This can be obtained from your referring doctor. If there is no oral steroid coverage, patient will be given intravenous hydrocortisone before the exam for an additional charge.
-
Please inform the centre if patient takes Metformin or Glucophage. These medications must be stopped on the day of the exam and for 48 hours after the exam.
-
No food or drink for at least 4-6 hours before exam. Usual medication is allowed if taken with a small amount of water (except for Metformin or Glucophage).
